epic multi tome adventures can be interesting reads, but at the gaming table the wise GM uses old school randomness for adventure and story telling mechanics for interesting characterization.

@wandererbill I'll bite, what do you mean by storytelling mechanics?

@rimraf aspects, artha, bennies, bonds, luck (as an advantage or a stat, depending on game system), sanity ... just to name a few. And of course the ever popular reaction roll.
