Hello! I'm a Spaniard nerd with interests in conlanging and computers (bio for more).

I tried getting into Mastodon in 2018, but I didn't stick to it and forgot it existed barely 3 days in. Now, I am currently going through a self-hosting hyperfocus spree, and inevitably, Mastodon's existence came back to my mind, so I'm here to try again

Conlangs Thread/Tree

Okay, alright, I'm doing it! I'm recreating my thread in here

I don't know why this mentally snowballed into such a difficult task but anyway

On November 28th, 2015 I said to a friend: "so, a month ago I discovered r/conlangs"; and that's how my conlanging journey started

I'm putting info on each as a subthread hanging from this post

So I did that characters test that has been doing the rounds lately (and maybe not for the 1st time? The site rings a bell)

I don't like the top 1 (from Big Bang Theory; it's probably accurate, but Idk the characters well enough and I hate that series) and I don't recognize some of the highest characters; here are the ones that I recognize/don't hate

Also shout-out to my man Daniel Jackson (from Stargate SG-1) at 26 with a 77% match let's goooooo (the highest match is 86%, for reference)

@Patricia YAML isn't bad, you just need the right accessory on your laptop to debug. :blobfoxcomputerowonotice:

AI bros: AI is already sentient, outperforms humans in every task!

Amazon: since you bought a dozen books on abstract algebra, here are these study guides for pre-algebra we thought you might like. They all have "algebra" in the title!

LinkedIn automated recruiting: how would you, tenured faculty member in CS, like to apply to this summer internship in software development for junior undergraduates? Your resume lists a degree in computer science!

Various automated recruiting emails: we see you are a professor, here are 10 open faculty positions in fields you know nothing about. They all say "professor" in the ads!

GitHub Copilot: <always suggests repeating the same paragraph I just wrote, but with made-up citation keys instead of the ones I used>

Meta's Galactica model for summarizing research: <makes up random crap when asked for an overview of basically anything>

I realize there are folks working hard on these things and plenty of smart people I admire have built really impressive systems but... the gap between the hype and reality is really absurd, even by tech industry standards.

adulthood means hurting your back when you relax incorrectly

Hoy en la Biblioteca de Filología de la UCM me han enseñado libros que se usaron como parapeto durante la Guerra Civil y que quedaron, por tanto, marcados por las balas.

hey did you know the roots of a cubic polynomial can be visualized using an equilateral triangle?

🔵 vertices are roots
🔴 the incenter is the inflection point
🟢 the incircle boundaries are the local minima/maxima

It's been a while since I've played it but I forgot how good Dominion is. It's crazy that the game starts fresh and fun with all the nonsense but it hits the mark every single time!

Hi! How about an #introduction !

I'm the studio director of Double Dagger Studio and we're making the indie game Little Kitty, Big City.

There seems to be a popular perception that muting keywords is a practicable alternative to CWs, and I think that's rooted in the fallacy that CWs are de facto mutes. But good, descriptive CWs help people make exceptions on a case-by-case basis, so that they can consider factors like "do I trust the person posting this?" or "is this local to me?" or even just "am I in the right headspace for this right now?" Mutes can never be that granular.l, which is why CWs give people more agency.

people censoring words in toots like the US uses beeps for "fuck" on TV

What is the point of writing Tw***er or El*n? Everyone knows what you're talking about and filters don't work, congrats.

My newest game IS OUT.

Reslion

A traditional name of the ruling family of Sagaia, especially once the monarchy was restored by agents of the Lion.

From Middle Sagaian Reslioni, from Latin Rex Lioni, "King for the Lion".

An interesting development in #Spanish electronic discourse: usage of "compartir" (to share) with an indirect object instead of a prepositional regime complement starting with "con". Probably influenced by the syntax of "enviar" (to send).

Normal usage: He compartido un enlace contigo.
New usage: Te he compartido un enlace.

Not sure if this is expanding to non-electronic discourse as well. #linguistics #SpanishLinguistics

Day 1 on Mastodon: I am johnsmith@mastodon.social? it seems pretty ok I guess?

Day 3 on Mastodon: im pissburglar@daposts.zone now. all fucks to website boy.

Stuttering so much during a video-call at work that my workmates think my internet is failing 👌👌👌

Headlines like “Will this new Mastodon thing survive?” are funny when you’ve been on here for 5+ years
