Pinned toot

Hi all, I'm Shane, a software developer from Texas. I've got a huge interest in fantasy in general, and a strong believer in the power of stories and art to define ourselves, and as such have a huge interest in tabletop, particularly Dnd.

I'm checking out Mastodon to see if it's a better fit than what tumblr might be headed towards, so here's to making new friends!

Know a little markdown and want to make your DnD5E homebrew stuff look really cool?

This is a great tool.

@RocjawCypher Oh, I see! Games like or are, like, well and good, but they feel NOT DIFFERENT ENOUGH from (a certain flavor of) to me. It's a big world out there and I dig having my mind blow as often as possible.
If you think you might be interested in giving some *wildly* different rule-sets a read, @ me for a reading list anytime. Most things I play fit in considerably slimmer book(lets) than anything we've been mentioning so far, and a few are available for free.

@RocjawCypher As an alternative to looking up card meanings, look at the images on the card and figure out what they mean to you. There is no one single "right" meaning for a card, and finding the one that resonates with you helps you grow as a reader...and as a character creator.

He'll tell you all about what could have been, what should have been, and if you ask him he'd swear that they could have finished the Great Bridge- or as it's known now, the fool's dock for how it just ends mid stream- but he knows in his heart that he cut one too many corners and doomed it from the start. That said, if you can get him to sober up, and get him a real project again? The man could work a miracle.

Third card, Future: VI of pentacles, reversed. Selfishness, stinginess, debt. Yeah, he fucked up big time. He's broke, and by the sound of it mean. Selfishness... Maybe he even tried to shift the blame on to a subordinate and save himself? Someone obviously had reciepts though.

So, drunken old bill sits at the bar and pisses away what little he has left of his fortune on rotgut, bitter about the glory days and the bridges he built, still blaming his underling who exposed him.

First Card, Past: King of wands.
Big picture, leader, overcoming challenges. So this guy was in charge of something, and good at it. He's going to be in a village on a forests edge, so lets say woodworking- construction.

Second card, Present: II of Wands reversed. Lack of planning or bad planning, disorganization. Maybe he had a big job? Was supposed to build a bridge that spanned the great river and he got excited and rushed it. That seems like why he's so jacked up probably.

If you're not super familiar with Tarot definitions (I'm not) I reccomend a tarot app that explains them- I use Golden Thread Tarot. if they're going to be a big, reoccuring character, the Celtic cross gives you enough to flesh them out from nothing. If they're not, go with the three card spread- past/present/future.

As an example, I want a character who hangs around my bar and drinks and mocks my PCs. Why? Let's find out shall we?

When you first come up with the core concept of a character- the role you want them to play, or the scene, or the back story- how do you flesh them out?

I'm a fan of doing a tarot reading for the character and using that to add depth, backstory, arc, ect. What methods do you prefer?

Some beginners resources for miniature painting that I found very helpful: Show more

An in progress job, for Bella of Oleander, Druidic Assasin and failed freedom fighter.

Myself, I also run an incredibly homebrew heavy game. I have an entire drop box full of Pdfs for monsters, classes, spells, and rule add ons, and since my players meet so irregularly, I have plenty of time to prep my own content for a custom setting. I enjoy asking why? And filling in the gaps with my own work.

Commission for one of my DnD buddies...Faust Erethal, the self proclaimed โ€˜King of Thieves,โ€™ leader of the infamous thieves guild: The Silver Hand. To his right, Gunrick, his goblin lieutenant.

Here's a question for anyone who's done any Dming- how much of what you do is hombrew, custom content? Do you prefer pick up and go premade? Do you like to create your own worlds? How much detail do you go into? Or do you improvise?

In my Bio I mentioned painting as a hobby- to iterate on that, I do some miniature painting! Below I have a diorama I made out of all the minis I've painted so far. Everything except the barbarian in the center was done by me, and the floors and walls were all 3d Printed!
