Usually when you see a map in an RPG it is a very modern map. Which is good, as they let you describe things to the player. However, when showing things to players, you could bring in maps from other traditions here, to help them get a sense for the place and culture.

@Canageek I draw all my player-facing maps like medieval maps; directions are right, size & distance of landmarks are arbitrary by importance. Makes it easier to handle getting-lost rolls on my hex map.

@Canageek That's a fascinating read. I wonder if it's equally relevant that those "maps" almost appear to be more artistic than practical, or else by amateur cartographers. In other words, is it significant that the maps are *old* or is it significant that the maps are done by regular folk? (Or both)
